  25. NEW FEATURES 
  26.  
  27. 1.  VirusScan's powerful new user interface provides 
  28.     advanced scan configuration settings and a complete
  29.     Tools menu. From the Tools menu, users can: Password 
  30.     protect scan tasks, gain access to the McAfee Virus 
  31.     List, and start the VirusScan Console. The Tools menu
  32.     is conveniently located in VirusScan's main window.     
  33.  
  34. 2.  The VirusScan Console is an intuitive addition to
  35.     VirusScan for Windows 3.1x. The VirusScan Console
  36.     facilitates easy and efficient scheduling and 
  37.     configuring of scan tasks. 
  38.  
  39. 3.  VirusScan v3.1.0 offers configuration lockdown for 
  40.     both the on-demand scanner and VShield, the on-access
  41.     scanner, through password protection. 
  42.  
  43.     Users or administrators can now password protect scan
  44.     settings to prevent unintentional changes being made.
  45.  
  46. 4.  VirusScan's new conversion utility identifies existing
  47.     custom profiles during installation and converts them
  48.     to scan tasks. The tasks can then be easily accessed 
  49.     with the VirusScan Console.   
  50.  
  51. 5.  VirusScan for Windows 3.1x now supports ISeamless 
  52.     Install Scripts. ISeamless Install Scripts allow 
  53.     administrators and OEMs to customize the installation
  54.     procedure for VirusScan. The custom installs can, among 
  55.     other things, configure VirusScan, launch another 
  56.     program before or after the install, and change the 
  57.     amount of end-user interaction necessary to install the 
  58.     product.
  59.  
  60.     Note: ISeamless Install Scripts must be compiled on a
  61.     32-bit operating system. ISeamless cannot be compiled on
  62.     a Windows 3.1x system.
  63.  
  64.  
  65. * ENHANCEMENTS *
  66.  
  67. 1.  When unloading VShield using the VShield Configuration
  68.     Manager, it is no longer necessary to exit windows for
  69.     the changes to take effect. To unload VShield, simply
  70.     clear the Load VShield at Startup checkbox, click
  71.     Apply, and select Yes when prompted to unload VShield
  72.     now.
  73.     
  74. 2.  Enhanced VirusScan installation. User's can now 
  75.     uninstall previous versions of VirusScan during instal-
  76.     lation of v3.1.0. When installing VirusScan v3.1.0 over
  77.     a previous version, the user is automatically prompted
  78.     to run the uninstaller.  
  79.  
  80. 3.  Detection of the AOL4FREE Trojan. This DAT file ,3006,  
  81.     contains an added detection method that allows users 
  82.     to scan for the presence of AOL4FREE Trojan on their 
  83.     hard drives. If found, the file should be deleted 
  84.     immediately.

  554. KNOWN ISSUES
  555.  
  556. 1.  The new 3000 series DATs contained in VirusScan v3.1.0
  557.     are not backward compatible with the VirusScan v2.x
  558.     series. The 3000 series DATs should not be used with
  559.     VirusScan v2.x products.
  560.  
  561. 2.  When creating an Emergency Disk, in some cases,
  562.     additional drivers must be loaded in order to access a 
  563.     driver specific hard drive (i.e. a compressed drive). 
  564.     Before modifying the Emergency Disk, please refer to 
  565.     your hard disk documentation for additional information
  566.     on creating a boot disk.    
  567.  
  568. 3.  If password protection is set for VShield or any
  569.     scan task, when an associated program is launched, you 
  570.     will be prompted to verify the password. You must use 
  571.     the mouse to click in the text field to enter the 
  572.     password or click on cancel to exit. Keyboard strokes
  573.     are not functional. This is a Microsoft issue as stated 
  574.     in Microsoft's Knowledge Base Article ID #Q84133.
  575.  
  576. 4.  If Move Infected File is selected on the Actions page,
  577.     infected files will be moved to the directory specified. 
  578.     If the Windows Copy command fails during this procedure,
  579.     a zero byte file size stamp may be left in the destin-
  580.     ation directory when carrying out the Copy command.
  581.  
  582. 5.  The CTRL+C and CTRL+BREAK option to break out of DOS
  583.     applications in a DOS window is disabled when you 
  584.     install VirusScan. This is to prevent a host of issues
  585.     that would be caused by CTRL+C and CTRL+BREAK interfer-
  586.     ing with VShield activity. Consequently, if a DIR
  587.     command is executed in a DOS window, and then a CTRL+C
  588.     or a CTRL+BREAK is executed, the DIR display will not
  589.     be canceled and an incorrect DIR display may result. 
  590.  
  591. 6.  If VShield detects an infected file that is decompress-
  592.     ing in a DOS session and the DOS session is terminated, 
  593.     VShield as well as Pkunzip and any other program being 
  594.     run from the DOS window will be discontinued. Although 
  595.     the VShield icon will still be displayed in the Taskbar, 
  596.     VShield will be disabled. VShield must be re-enabled by 
  597.     restarting Windows to maintain maximum virus protection.  
  598.  
  599. 7.  If the product is uninstalled while VirusScan 
  600.     (Scan16.exe) or the VirusScan Console (AVConsol.exe)
  601.     are open, some files may not be removed (i.e. 
  602.     Scan16.exe, Mcscan16.dll, Mcgui16.dll, AVConsol.exe). 
  603.     If you try to delete the McAfee\Viruscan directory 
  604.     before restarting Windows, error messages will appear
  605.     stating that the files are being used by Windows. Close
  606.     all VirusScan related programs, excluding VShield, 
  607.     before uninstalling VirusScan.
  608.  
  609. 8.  The Parameters field in the Task Properties page is 
  610.     provided to take advantage of command-line parameters
  611.     for programs other than VirusScan. For example, a
  612.     NotePad.exe task can be set to open a file by entering
  613.     the filename (i.e. Whatsnew.txt) in the parameter field. 
  614.  
  615. 9.  The conversion utility preserves the scan targets
  616.     but does not preserve the command-line parameters.
  617.     When custom profiles include command-line parameters,
  618.     the resulting task (.VSC file) will have one or more
  619.     invalid scan items that will need to be manually
  620.     updated.
  621.     
  622.     Command-line parameters in scan tasks must be manually 
  623.     added. Pre-existing profiles (.PRF files) will be moved
  624.     to the target installation directory for reference
  625.     purposes.
  626.  
  627. 10.  When scheduling multiple scan tasks through the 
  628.     VirusScan console, ensure that task schedules do not
  629.     overlap. If the schedules overlap, only the first task
  630.     will be implemented and tasks scheduled thereafter will
  631.     be ignored.
  632.  
  633. 11. If a task is scheduled to run minimized, the scan will
  634.     not begin until the window is maximized. This is because
  635.     when the window is minimized, the memory scanning window
  636.     is prevented from being displayed. The scan will
  637.     commence as soon as the window is maximized.
  638.  
  639. 12. If the AVCONSOLE.INI file is deleted and then recreated
  640.     upon launching the AV Console, the default Scan16 task
  641.     will change from "Scan Drive C" and "All Drives" to
  642.     "VirusScan."
  643.  
  644. 13. When the default.vsc or default.vsh files are renamed
  645.     or deleted, VirusScan or VShield creates a new default
  646.     file upon launch. The new default file is set to limit
  647.     the size of the log file to 10kb and the Compressed
  648.     option will be selected.
  649.  
  650. ____________
  651. INSTALLATION
  652.  
  653. * INSTALLING THE PRODUCT *
  654.  
  655. 1.  Take one of the following steps:
  656.    
  657.     - If you are installing from diskette or compact disc, 
  658.       insert the VirusScan for Windows 3.1x installation 
  659.       diskette or the CD-ROM.
  660.     - If you are installing from files downloaded from a BBS 
  661.       or the McAfee Web Site, decompress the zipped files 
  662.       into a directory on your local drive or the network.
  663.  
  664. 2.  Select Run from the File menu.
  665.  
  666. 3.  If you are installing from diskette, type: x:\setup.exe 
  667.     (where x is the drive that contains the diskette). 
  668.     Click OK.
  669.    
  670.     If you are installing from compact disc, type: 
  671.     x:\win3x\setup.exe (where x is the drive that contains 
  672.     the CD-ROM). Click OK.
  673.  
  674.     If you are installing from downloaded files, type:
  675.     x:\path\setup.exe (where x:\path is the location of the 
  676.     files). Click OK.
  677.  
  678.     Response: The Welcome screen is displayed. Click Next 
  679.     to continue.
  680.  
  681. 5.  Follow the on-screen installation instructions to 
  682.     complete VirusScan installation.
  683.  
  684.  
  685. * PERFORMING A SILENT INSTALLATION *
  686.  
  687. If you would like to perform a "silent" installation of 
  688. VirusScan, requiring minimal user interaction and using all 
  689. default or "Typical" installation settings, add -s (i.e. 
  690. SETUP.EXE -s) to the setup command when you install the
  691. product.
  692.  
  693. Network Administrators can customize the silent installation 
  694. feature by following the steps outlined below.
  695.  
  696. 1.  Check in the Windows directory to ensure that a file 
  697.     named SETUP.ISS does not already exist. If it does, 
  698.     rename it, back it up, or delete it.
  699.  
  700. 2.  Run SETUP.EXE with the -r switch, (i.e. SETUP.EXE -r).
  701.  
  702. 3.  Select the components you would like to be installed
  703.     during the silent installation.  All responses will
  704.     be recorded.
  705.  
  706. 4.  Finish the installation, and locate the file SETUP.ISS
  707.     in the Windows directory.
  708.  
  709. 5.  Locate the section [SdSetupType-0] in the SETUP.ISS
  710.     file and go to the line:
  711.  
  712.         Result=x
  713.  
  714.         where x is equal to
  715.         301 (Typical installation)
  716.         302 (Compact installation)
  717.         303 (Custom installation)
  718.  
  719. 6.  Add 100 to the above value, so that the Result variable 
  720.     is equal to 401, 402, or 403. Modifying this file will 
  721.     allow the installation to copy the VirusScan files to 
  722.     the drive where the operating system resides instead of
